BOTHA HOUSE

AUTHENTICITY AND STYLE MEETS TRANQUIL SPLENDOUR

Botha House comprises of nine double or twin en-suite bedrooms and a self-catering cottage, all adorned with king-sized beds. This historical house can comfortably host up to twenty-two visitors. Seven of our suites and the cottage offer all-embracing sea views with the remaining two smaller suites overlooking our lovely and picturesque courtyard garden. Botha House provides an unforgettable experience, wrapped in vintage charm and timeless elegance. Your home away from home where authenticity and style meets tranquil splendour. Less than an hour’s drive from Durban, situated in the heart of one of KwaZulu-Natal’s coastal forests, Botha House is an ideal location to enjoy the full South Coast experience. For the discerning golfer, pack your golf clubs and tee-off at the attractive Umdoni Park Golf Club. Enjoy a stroll along Pennington’s blue flag beach, or a walk in the Umdoni Park forest with exciting birding opportunities. For the more adventurous at heart, go scuba diving off the world-renowned Aliwal Shoal or bungee jumping at Oribi Gorge. Or simply relax with a glass of wine or tipple of your choice and enjoy the spectacular ocean vistas from our terrace or pool.

The Locals will tell you in Zulu– “Woza hlala nami kwa-amanthe isihlahla Umdoni phansi.” – “Come sit with me under the Umdoni tree by the riverbank.” Umdoni Park was the visionary creation of Sir Frank Reynolds. After acquiring the land in 1918, Sir Frank set about drawing up the final papers that denoted the Umdoni Trust, a mandate that ensured the well-being of this exquisite site. To this day, this beautiful park is maintained in line with the vision initiated in 1918. For the public, it is a place where bird and wildlife abound, where the coastal forest envelopes you as you venture deeper into the indigenous bush along the many well-maintained trails, where an 18-hole layout tests even the most seasoned golfer, and where a luxury guesthouse–having entertained statesmen and past presidents alike–stands proudly overlooking the Indian Ocean… Truly a gift to the nation.

We have over 20 kilometres of forest hiking trails, ideal for those seeking adventure. Bring along your walking shoes and enjoy trails that are over a hundred years old. To this day, all paths are clearly marked and well maintained and have a varying degree of difficulty to challenge even the seasoned hiker. The Gorge Trail takes you down into the Mkhumbane River Gorge where you’ll be met by steep inclines, boulders and waterfalls.

For the more relaxed walking experience, Molly’s Trail winds its way along the top of the ridge and brings you to the Otter Site, a stunning viewpoint punched out of the lush coastal bush. Words can’t do it justice—it’s an experience you have to see for yourself to truly appreciate.

Pennington boasts miles of stunning coastline, where pristine beaches meet dramatic rocky outcrops, creating a paradise for nature lovers. Perfect for discovering rock pools and the fascinating creatures that depend on those rocky water hollows for survival.  With a touch of luck, you may spot a pod of dolphins surfing in the waves.

The stretch of coastline from Durban to Port Edward, regularly referred to as the “Golf Coast”, is a Mecca for golfing enthusiasts from players just beginning–to expert levels. There are ten golf courses to choose from, luxurious golf resorts, a balmy winter climate, upscale dining, and breathtaking views which contribute to an unforgettable golfing experience. So, pack your golf clubs and enjoy one of the South Coast’s most well-known championship level courses, right on your doorstep. Arrange a Play & Stay package or just arrive and take advantage of Botha House’s location amongst this true reflection of golfing bliss.

There can be no doubt that Sir Frank Reynolds was thrilled with delight and a deep, inward satisfaction when the Prime Minister turned to him and asked, “Could you find me two or three acres here? I would like to put up a small cottage for Annie.” In his early notes, Sir Frank Reynolds referred the residence intended for the Prime Minister as “Botha Cottage”.  Sir Frank likely used the word “cottage” because General Botha had expressed a desire to build a small house by the sea, or he may have done so with a touch of humour, as he set about constructing an elegant Cape Dutch style house—around which much of the interest in Umdoni Park revolves today.

Today, this beautiful and historic home serves as a bed and breakfast—a true treasure for all who live in or visit South Africa. Botha House is nestled in the heart of one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most pristine coastal forests offering an unforgettable experience.  We invite you to enjoy this tranquil setting, complete with forest trails with exciting opportunities for walking and birding opportunities. Louis Botha was a great man of action, he was renowned for his simplicity, humanity, quick wit and good nature.  As Sir Winston Churchill once said that he “…was one of the truly great men of the world.” (Source: R Steyn, ‘Louis Botha A Man Apart ‘, Jonathan Ball Publishers, South Africa, 2018.)

This charming historic home features 9 en-suite double or twin bedrooms and a fully equipped self-catering cottage, all with luxurious king-sized beds—comfortably accommodating up to 22 guests. 7 of our suites and the cottage offer panoramic sea views with the remaining 2 smaller suites off our lovely and picturesque courtyard garden.
